At first, the Defense of the Ancients mod that became the forerunner of Dota 2 was created by Eul for the Warcraft 3 game. Amidst the popularity of the mod, Eul stepped back to develop the mod.

Of the many attempts at creating similar mods, only one has managed to grab attention, namely Dota: Allstars developed by Guinsoo. The game that became the starting point for the development of Dota 2.

A few years later, Guinsoo handed Dota: Allstars to IceFrog and he decided to return to Riot Games to develop League of Legends. LoL is a MOBA game that is similar to Dota and has many fans.

Although at first Dota did not have the support of any developer or publisher, but it did not make this game dim. In fact, it made it even more successful in the world, not long after LoL and HoN were released, Dota also received full support from Valve.

In 2009, IceFrog announced that Dota had joined Valve, and the first information about Dota 2 in 2010. Finally Valve announced that the game would be released in beta form in 2011. The release of Dota 2 received many positive responses from gamers.

Because of this, Valve decided to showcase Dota 2 to the public at the Gamescom 2011 event. At the event they announced that they would hold a tournament with a prize pool of 1.6 million US dollars.

It was the biggest prize in the entire world for an esport category at the time. A few months later Valve managed to invite many people to the Beta version of Dota 2 and professional events began to form. In 2013, Dota 2 was finally officially released on Steam and can be played by everyone.
