Who is Jerry Lawson
Gerald “Jerry” Lawson was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1940 with an extraordinary talent for electronics. His ability to tinker with electronic components was apparent from an early age. He used to repair his neighbour’s TV and built a radio station using recycled parts.
Lawson was a pioneer of home video games in the 1970s by helping to create the Fairchild Channel F, the first home video game system with interchangeable games or cartridges.
Lawson was one of the few African-American engineers working in computing during the early days of video games. It’s safe to say that without Lawson, the development of gaming technology wouldn’t be what it is today.
Mr Videogame Cartridge
During his career, Gerald Lawson joined Fairchild Semiconductor as an engineering consultant. Until a few years passed, he managed to get a position as Director of Engineering and Marketing for the video game department.
He was dubbed the “father of videogame cartridges” by Black Enterprise magazine in 1982. He left Fairchild and founded the gaming company Video-Soft. In addition, Jerry Lawson is also remembered for designing a new eight-way joystick and a “pause” button. Which was a first for home video game consoles at the time.
In 2011, the International Game Developers Association recognized Gerald “Jerry” Lawson as a pioneer of the home video game industry. To this day, Gerald “Jerry” Lawson’s achievements are enshrined in the World Video Game Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York.
If we now see the sophistication of home video game technology such as the Sony PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Wii from its graphics, gameplay, and various algorithms, it all stems from the perseverance of Gerald “Jerry” Lawson.
