Nintendo has finally introduced the successor console to the Nintendo Switch through a short promotional video. The console is called Nintendo Switch 2 and, as per the many leaks circulating, it seems to be a bigger and more powerful version of the previous model.
Fans have waited long enough for the second-generation Nintendo Switch. The first generation of the handheld gaming device was launched in 2017 and immediately caught the attention of many. Since its launch, the Nintendo Switch has sold nearly 150 million units worldwide.
1. Nintendo Switch 2 Trailer
In the video Nintendo released, Nintendo showed that the Switch 2’s design has evolved to be more modern than the previous model. The console offers some notable improvements that are sure to catch the attention of many.
As previously rumored, this console is very similar to its hugely successful predecessor. It’s a hybrid console that can be played both portably and on a TV using a dock, and comes complete with a detachable Joy-Con controller.
This information about the hardware confirms that the console will support compatibility with physical and digital games from the first Switch. In addition, it appears that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con will magnetically connect to the console, and there is also a U-shaped stand. The Switch 2 will also have one additional USB-C port as well as a new button on the right Joy-Con.
Nintendo does however provide a warning that “it is possible that some Nintendo Switch games are not fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.”
2. Nintendo Switch 2 Releases in 2025
“Nintendo Switch 2 will be released in 2025,” the company said in a brief statement, as quoted by CNN on Thursday (16/1).
They plan to share more detailed information in the presentation of their latest console, which will take place on April 2, 2025. The company is planning Nintendo Switch 2 hands-on experience events in more than a dozen cities ahead of the next-gen system’s launch.

3. First Generation Switch Success
The Nintendo Switch since its release has become one of the best-selling consoles in history, with total sales reaching 146.04 million units.
This makes it Nintendo’s second best-selling console, losing only to the Nintendo DS which sold 154.02 million units. In addition, the Switch also managed to surpass the sales of the Nintendo Wii which reached 101.63 million units, the Game Boy with 118.69 million units, and the Nintendo 3DS which sold 75.94 million units.
The Nintendo Switch is the first hybrid console that integrates the functions of a home console and a handheld. This success was fueled by iconic games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
