In a press release, four companies within the Sony Group – Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions – will produce an anime series adapting the video game Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.
The team involved in the project is tentatively directors Takanobu Mizuno and Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass, Fate/Zero, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica).
Studio Kamikaze Douga will handle the animation production, and Sony Music will be the strategic partner for the music and soundtrack of the series. You can check out the latest visuals for Ghost of Tsushima below. The series is scheduled to air exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027.
1. Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime is an Interesting Collaboration Project
Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini stated that this project reflects the strong creative collaboration within the Sony family. The project combines the expertise of PlayStation Studios and PlayStation Productions, the creative teams of Sucker Punch Productions and Aniplex, and the renowned artist roster of Sony Music. In addition, it also involves Crunchyroll’s fan-oriented global marketing and distribution strategy.
“The Ghost of Tsushima anime will give fans an exciting new way to enjoy the game in an anime format that will be bold and innovative,” he said.
Purini has previously discussed the adaptation of material from unusual sources, such as manhwa and stories from outside Japan, including from India.
Asad Qizilbash, who serves as the Head of PlayStation Productions, also showed his enthusiasm by revealing, “Having proven the exceptional quality and flexibility of our game properties through various successful film and television projects, we are very excited to announce our first anime adaptation.”
“The rich and immersive world of Ghost of Tsushima, as well as the Legends mode inspired by Japanese mythology, offer the perfect backdrop for this project, and Aniplex is the right partner to turn the popular video game from Sucker Punch Productions into a stunning anime series,” he added.
2. The Sequel to the Game will Also be Released Soon
The Ghost of Tsushima game itself was released in 2020 and soon became one of PlayStation’s flagship brands. The story follows the journey of Jin Sakai, the last samurai to survive the Mongol invasion. He must decide between staying true to the samurai code of conduct or changing his fighting style.
In its multiplayer mode, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, players can collaborate as samurai to fight various types of enemies.
In addition to the anime, Ghost of Tsushima fans can also look forward to the game sequel titled Ghost of Yōtei. The game is planned to be released in 2025 and takes place 329 years after the first game. In this sequel, you will be introduced to a new character named Atsu. Atsu is a female warrior who must face a variety of new threats, including firearms and wolves.
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will be coming to Crunchyroll in 2027. Further information regarding the voice cast and production team has yet to be revealed. But this project further demonstrates Sony’s commitment to developing the Ghost of Tsushima universe.
