Best Horror Movie Recommendations 2022
1. Men
The first best horror movie recommendation of 2022 is this film directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina). And yes guys, this was one of my favorite horror movies last year.
The movie basically tells the story of a widow named Harper Marlowe (Jessie Buckley). She became a widow after her husband, James (Paapa Essiedu) tragically passed away. Now to relieve her sadness and turmoil, she decides to take a vacation to a remote village.
But instead of finding his peace, he received terror from the male residents of the place. And this terror we can say is “weird.” Now throughout the movie, we then witness how Harper’s efforts to survive and uncover all the strangeness that occurs.
Aside from Buckley and Rory Kinnear’s (No Time to Die) crazy performances, it is Garland’s crazy direction that makes Men really cool. The entire visual concept is beautifully implemented and yet, still very creepy.
Anyway, if you like watching horror that is somewhat absurd, metaphorical, like beautiful visuals, and also like the psychological horror genre, then Men is not to be missed.
2. The Black Phone
The next best horror movie recommendation for 2022 is The Black Phone. Maybe many of you have also heard the crazy hype of this movie. In fact, many say that this film is one of the best horror film releases last year.
And that statement is not wrong. This supernatural horror genre movie is indeed very tense from start to finish. This is not to mention the appearance of the villain’s mask, The Grabber (Ethan Hawke), which looks very creepy.
Hawke’s performance as The Grabber also leaves us scratching our heads. When we see him, we forget that he’s one of the former actors of the adored 90s romantic drama.
Oh yes, of course we also can’t forget the performance of Mason Thames (For All Mankind) who plays the main character of the movie, Finney Blake. His performance is very natural and very relevant. Alias, yes that’s how a child/teen reacts when kidnapped and held captive by a creepy child kidnapper.
3. Barbarian
Just like The Black Phone, I’m pretty sure that many of us are aware of the huge hype of this movie. We even heard that the movie is the best horror movie release of 2022.
For me, the movie was great. But if I were to rate it as a whole, The Black Phone is much more to my taste. Nevertheless, once again, Barbarian is one of the best horror movie releases.
The concept is simple, relevant, but also features imaginary elements. Anyway, because of this, many of us now think twice before renting a house. Especially those rented from Airbnb services.
The movie features nostalgic 70s horror elements. All of this is enhanced by the great performances of all the actors and actresses, especially Georgina Campbell (All My Friends Hate Me) who plays the main character, Tess Marshall.
4. Scream
Scream is one of the favorite horror movie franchises not only for me, but most of you. So it’s no wonder that we had mixed reactions when we found out about the 5th movie.
On one hand we feel excited, but on the other hand we feel anxious. Because as we all know, this slasher horror franchise has a legendary reputation. Fortunately, in the end, it’s a sense of relief and satisfaction.
The reason is, not only the performance of all actors and actresses is qualified, but the most important thing is that Scream (Scream 5) emphasizes the sequel aspect. I mean, in my opinion, this movie is like Top Gun: Maverick (2022).
Specifically, both Top Gun: Maverick and Scream, is a remake/reboot but also a sequel to the first or last movie. Now most other movies emphasize the remake aspect.
Well once again, Scream puts forward the story of the continuation of Scream 4 (2011). But at the same time, the movie is also a “subtle remake.” And of course, it still looks and feels like the previous Scream movies.
The directing duo, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not), are true to their word. Specifically, the promise that they wouldn’t keep showing the movie with respect and tradition. Hopefully, the sequel, Scream VI (2023), will be just as fun as this movie.
5. Pearl
So here are my super-duper recommended best horror movies of 2022. 1 word for this movie: GOKIL! This prequel to the movie X (2022), is really “sick”.
This prequel tells the story of the youth of X’s sadistic granny villain, Pearl (Mia Goth). In the movie, we will see how Pearl’s early life was. Specifically, the movie will answer whether Pearl had sadistic tendencies from a young age.
If so, what prompted it? Well everything is answered in this movie. And unlike X which emphasizes or has a slasher horror genre mixed with the adult film genre, Pearl is more of a psychological horror genre mixed with character study. It’s like the Joker (2019) but with a female version and a bit more psycho and tragic.
Besides Ti West’s (X, MaXXXine) very mature and retro concept of direction, it is Mia Goth’s performance that makes this movie really cool. SERIOUSLY, if Goth is not at least nominated for best actress (female actor) at the Oscar awards in 2023, the academy has really made a fatal mistake.
Without Goth’s super duper crazy performance, Pearl might have been as mediocre as X or even more disappointing. Anyway guys, Pearl, is not only the best horror movie of 2022, but also one of the best movies (overall) of the year.
Hopefully these 5 best horror movie recommendations for 2022 are useful!
