Chris Evans Returns to MCU, Joins Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Evans will surprisingly follow Downey back into the MCU for a role in Avengers: Doomsday. What will Chris Evans' role be in the movie?

Based on reports from Variety and other major media outlets, Chris Evans is reportedly officially returning to the MCU and will join the film Avengers: Doomsday. Evans becomes the first actor to be announced for the next Avengers project since the big announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, which revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom.

This summer, Evans also appeared in a brief, attention-grabbing role in “Deadpool & Wolverine” as Johnny Storm. Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch is a character he played in Fox’s Fantastic Four in 2005 and 2007.

Chris Evans will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. At the moment, his role is still not entirely clear, but sources say that Anthony Mackie will also return as Captain America.

Although the chances of Evans donning the Captain America costume seem slimmer, it would be quite surprising if he returned to play Steve Rogers. Because at the end of “Avengers: Endgame”, Cap has become an old man and has handed over his national shield to Sam Wilson.

Over the course of his career in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Evans has appeared in 11 films from 2011 to 2024. These include four Avengers movies as well as several cameo appearances in Deadpool & Wolverine and in the end credits of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Captain Marvel (2019).

News of Evans’ return has actually emerged since 2021. At that time, he was reported to have signed a contract to appear in “at least” one Marvel movie, with the possibility of more. However, Evans dismissed rumors he would return to don the Captain America shield, especially after Mackie officially took over the role.

Mackie, who previously played the Falcon, first appeared as the new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) and will star in Captain America: Brave New World (2025).

2. There will be many superheroes in Doomsday

Joe and Anthony Russo are currently directing the films “Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” which are scheduled to release in 2027. These two films will be the finale of the Multiverse Saga in the MCU.

They also hinted that these movies will be interconnected, similar to the two parts of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”. Both blockbusters are also notable for featuring multiple Avengers heroes.

Story details for “Doomsday” have yet to be revealed, but Robert Downey Jr. is back – not as the iconic Iron Man, but as Doctor Victor von Doom, one of the main villains in the Fantastic Four films.

So, we can assume that many famous superheroes will be joining Downey and Evans in these upcoming movies. Given the multiverse-based storyline, they might appear as different versions of their characters, or even as completely different characters.
