More focusing on the Donkey character as well as a fifth film of the Shrek franchise by bringing back the original cast.
Eddie Murphy will return to play Donkey, Shrek by Mike Myers, and Fiona by Cameron Diaz. Based on this latest information, it looks like these projects will actually materialize as Murphy himself revealed.
“We started working on (Shrek 5) a few months ago. I’ve already shot the first part, and we’ll finish it this year. ‘Shrek’ will be released and Donkey will have his own movie,” said Eddie Murphy as we reported from Yoursay quoting Collider on Tuesday (6/25/2024).
When asked if he was recording for both projects simultaneously, Eddie Murphy gave the following answer.
“No, not at the same time. I’m starting to film Shrek, which will probably be released in 2025, and after that, we’ll work on the Donkey movie,” he said.
Success of Shrek Animated Movie
From 2001 to 2010, the Shrek franchise has released four films. The first film released in 2001 was a huge worldwide success with revenues of $487 million, confirming DreamWorks Animation’s position as one of the leading animation studios at the time.
This achievement was also marked by the Academy Award in the animated film category. Shrek 2, released in 2004, surpassed the success of the previous film by earning over $928 million. The two films even competed for the Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival.
While Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After didn’t garner as much praise as the previous two films in the series, they still managed to be successful at the box office with global earnings of $813 million and $752 million respectively.
In 2022, Universal Pictures released the latest movie in the Shrek series called Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The movie was a huge success, earning $485 million worldwide.
The Shrek franchise has become a significant element in the modern animation industry with four major films, several spin-offs, and a Broadway musical that won Tony Awards.
