The Mortal Kombat 2 movie finally shows a first look at some of the new characters that will be present in this sequel. One of the aspects that fans are most looking forward to is the presence of Johnny Cage. This character is very well known from the game, and will finally be involved in the movie’s storyline.
Entertainment Weekly featured photos of Johnny Cage played by Karl Urban, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, and Adeline Rudolph playing Kitana, along with Hiroyuki Sanada returning as Scorpion.
First Look at the New Character of Mortal Kombat 2 Movie
In the photo below, Urban looks energetic with Cage’s identical hairstyle and sunglasses, striking a pose like a martial artist. Behind him are Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade.
Director Simon McQuoid revealed that making Johnny Cage a part of the movie was a challenge, especially to keep his character from being over-the-top.
“We wanted this character to still have complexity, not just be comedic or too silly,” McQuoid said, adding that Johnny Cage’s introduction scene in the movie was very entertaining and managed to create the most laughter at the premiere.
Apart from Johnny Cage, the movie also features a number of new characters that fans have been waiting for. Adeline Rudolph will play Kitana, the daughter of Edenia who possesses a deadly fan weapon. On the other hand, Martyn Ford will make a powerful appearance as Shao Kahn, the ruler of Outworld who is the biggest challenge to Earthrealm.
Of course, old characters from the first movie will return, such as Ludi Lin who plays Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Joe Taslim as Noob Saibot, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion.
With this team, the epic battle between Earthrealm and Outworld will reach its climax in an actual Mortal Kombat tournament. This is certainly a moment that fans of the series are looking forward to.
2. Johnny Cage is the Main Focus of Mortal Kombat 2
Johnny Cage, who only appeared briefly in the first film, is now one of the central characters in MORTAL KOMBAT 2. Ed Boon, one of the creators of MORTAL KOMBAT, stated that this character has an important role in driving the storyline. He will be the link for the audience to understand the complex world of MORTAL KOMBAT.
Although known for his humorous and quirky attitude, Boon added that in this movie, Johnny Cage is not only funny, but also has a dimension that makes it easier for him to connect with the audience. Karl Urban, known for his role in THE BOYS, manages to present Johnny Cage in a fresh way.
While staying true to the original character from the video game, Urban adds an emotional depth that makes the character even more interesting. Urban’s more serious approach makes Johnny Cage not just a comedic caricature, but also a figure who goes through an emotional journey in a world full of conflict and magic.
Mortal Kombat 2 is now getting closer to its release date in theaters and IMAX, which is on October 24, 2025.
