In this modern era, a total of two names have been chosen to play the character of Harley Quinn in less than 10 years. They are Margot Robbie who appeared in two Suicide Squad films (2016 & 2021) and her solo film entitled Birds of Prey (2020). Then Lady Gaga who appeared as The Maiden of Mischief in Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel which was released earlier this month.
Although both are credited as playing Harley Quinn. But did you know that the two actresses have different styles and characteristics in portraying the character? Where is the difference?
Harley Quinn Margot Robbie & Lady Gaga Differences
If you’ve watched all four movies where the character exists. Both Margot Robbie & Lady Gaga’s versions of Harley Quinn are very different. Margot Robbie’s version seems to be looking for a more accurate approach to the comic version. The character is outgoing, maniacal, and sarcastic.
Even in the movies. Margot Robbie didn’t hesitate to give a bit of fighting action when portraying the character during the period of time she played the character from 2016 to 2021.
As for Lady Gaga’s version. Director Todd Phillips tried to find another approach. Where he took a realistic element through a phenomenon Folie a Deux. This is a mental disorder that is contagious between two or more people.
“There are some things about Harley in the movie that are taken from the comic book, but we took them and molded them to our liking,” Todd Phillips said as quoted directly from detikcom.
What is Harley Quinn According to Lady Gaga?
In addition to Todd Phillips, Lady Gaga was also open enough to answer the differences between her version of the character and Margot Robbie in the press. She explained that there are many dark elements that make her version of The Maiden of Mischief character not as expressive as Margot Robbie’s version.
For Gaga, the character in the musical on paper is not a difficult thing considering her background as a singer. But apparently, the Bad Romance singer also had to harmonize in a different way when she usually performs.
“People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That’s me as a performer, but that’s not what this movie is about. I’m playing a character. So I practiced a lot so that the way I sing fits the character of Harley Quinn, and not as a performer.”
