The producer and writer of I Am Legend 2, Akiva Godman, announced that the film will be a sequel with an alternative ending, rather than continuing the main story of the first film. This announcement was made during the San Diego Comic Con 2024 event.
The movie I Am Legend itself was released in 2007 and featured Will Smith as the lead. The story centers on the character Robert Neville, a military virus expert.
Robert Neville is the only human left and he uses his remaining time to find a cure for the virus that has wiped out humanity.
Alternative Ending Allows Neville’s Character to Appear in I Am Legend 2
In 2022, the announcement of the movie sequel came up and fans started speculating on how Neville could possibly reappear after he died at the end of the first movie.
Apparently, I Am Legend 2 will be a sequel that differs from the original movie’s storyline, instead using an alternate ending version.
“We will present a sequel story for an alternative cut where Will (Smith) lives and things are not going well for all of humanity.” Goldman said as quoted by Greenscene.
Overview of the Alternate Ending of the Movie I Am Legend
In the alternative ending of I Am Legend, we see how after years of research on Darkseekers, Robert Neville realized one thing. He realized that Darkseekers are actually just humans who are sick.
They are not monsters that humans should fear and destroy as others think. This change occurs when Neville sees the Alpha of the Darkseekers group drawing a butterfly, which makes him think that the Darkseekers can actually communicate with him.
The alternative ending of the movie I Am Legend itself is only in the home edition or DVD version of the movie.
I Am Legend 2 will feature actor Michael B. Jordan who is also known as Killmonger, and reportedly Will Smith will also join the project. As of now, there is no detailed information about the I Am Legend 2 movie.
Some time ago, Michael B. Jordan gave a little information that the project is still in the script development stage and has no release date or production date yet. Nonetheless, he stated that he is ready to act alongside his idol.
