The new Star Wars film, which will reportedly be released on December 18, 2026, is officially canceled. The replacement for the Star Wars film, whose official title does not yet exist, is the animated film Ice Age 6 which will air in 2026.
Disney has not explained the exact reason behind their decision to cancel the new Star Wars movie project that was supposed to air in 2026. However, they have chosen Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as the director for the movie.
1. No New Star Wars Projects in the Next Two Years
Variety reported on Friday (11/15) that there has been no confirmation of a new Star Wars project in the next two years. The project has only announced Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as the director.
The movie that will reportedly continue Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) story after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) lost screenwriter Steven Knight in early 2024. Steven Knight is the latest name to step down from the project, after Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson also left.
This isn’t the first time that a potential space opera franchise has ended before it actually got off the ground.

2. Ice Age 6 Replaces Star Wars Canceled in 2026
On the other hand, since the new Star Wars movie was canceled, it resulted in Ice Age 6 getting an official release date. The schedule was announced less than a week after the movie was officially introduced for production.
Ice Age 6 will bring back some of the iconic characters that have graced the saga. The voice actors for these characters will also officially return.
One of the actors involved is Ray Romano, who will be voicing Manny. Manny is a woolly mammoth who is the main character in the Ice Age saga. In addition, John Leguizamo will play Sid, the sloth, and Simon Pegg will voice Buck, the ancient weasel.
Queen Latifah will also return to play Ellie, the female mammoth who is Manny’s wife. Ice Age 6 will feature Scrat again after his absence in The Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild (2022).
Ice Age 6 is officially in production, but details about the plot of the sixth movie have yet to be revealed. This scheduling means that Ice Age 6 will be released about ten years after Ice Age: Collision Course (2016) and about four years after its spin-off movie, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild (2022).
