Inside Out 2 has officially become the highest grossing animated film of all time. The movie has earned US$1.46 billion globally during its six-week run.
This achievement also beats the previous achievement that Frozen II (2019) had as the highest-grossing animated film at US$1.45 billion.
Inside Out 2 is the highest grossing animated movie that also surpasses Barbie
In a Variety report, Inside Out 2 managed to outperform Barbie with a global revenue of US$1.44 billion. This makes it the 13th highest grossing movie in history.
In addition, Inside Out 2 is the only movie to make US$1 billion in just 19 days in 2024. Thus, Inside Out 2 officially became the highest grossing film of 2024 and joined the group of films that earned billions of dollars in revenue.
This success is supported by several factors, one of which is the success of the first film which generated US$858 million when it was released in 2015 and was then overtaken by the sequel in just one week.
Another factor is the four-quadrant appeal, which means the movie appeals to four major demographic groups of viewers, including men and women of all ages, including those above and below 25 years old.
Compelling Story
In terms of story, the plot of Inside Out 2 managed to captivate film critics and audiences, which in turn created a positive impression and indirectly promoted the movie and increased ticket sales.
After almost 10 years since the release of the previous movie, Inside Out 2 focuses on adventures in the more complex world of emotions in 13-year-old Riley’s mind.
As Riley goes through puberty, she faces a new range of emotions. Along with Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, Riley now also meets Anxiety or the new orange colored emotion.
Anxiety’s presence at Riley’s headquarters caused new drama in the regulation of emotions. Especially after Envy, Embarrasment, and Nostalgia came in and brought chaos.
