A touch of Sci-Fi yet so close to the people
Joko Anwar believes that despite being in the sci-fi genre, the stories in the Nightmares and Daydreams series are still closely related to the lives of Indonesian people.
“Nightmares and Daydreams started from unrest, because I believe that what I do in the series should be a mirror so that we can reflect on what we are facing now socially in Indonesia,” said Joko Anwar as reported by IDN Times, Thursday (13/6/2024).
In this context, he also described how poverty today has become something systematically organized.
“We talk about poverty. Structural poverty is the most dangerous, because it doesn’t mean that characters like Panji are people who don’t want to work hard, but there is something systematic that makes them unable to get out of poverty. This is what Nightmares and Daydreams tries to unravel, even though it’s science fiction,” Jokan continued.
Joko Anwar admits that once again, his work also does not provide definitive answers. Similar to his previous works, the Nightmares and Daydreams series also raises many questions.
“When we make movies, we don’t make statements. We don’t try to give answers. But we will stimulate the audience to ask more questions, because asking questions is the door to understanding more about our lives,” he said.
