Emilia Perez’s story is set in the violent Mexico City. The story begins when Rita, a lawyer stuck in a work rut, gets involved in a dangerous deal with Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, a ruthless cartel boss. Manitas wants to retire from the criminal world and change his identity to a woman named Emilia.
Manitas hired Rita to fake her death and undergo gender reassignment surgery, becoming Emilia. This transformation is not only an escape from a life of crime, but also a pent-up dream.
After the procedure, Emilia tries to leave her past behind and plans to reunite with her wife, Jessi, and her children. However, to achieve that goal, she had to return to the criminal underworld. When Emilia reappears after a few years, she recruits Rita again to help her.
2. Red One – November 6, 2024
Next up is this year’s Christmas holiday movie titled Red One. Set during Christmas, Red One tells the story of Santa Claus who gets into a difficult situation after being kidnapped by someone from the North Pole.
This incident threatens Christmas celebrations around the world. Callum Drift, head of security at the North Pole, must go to great lengths to save Santa Claus. To find Santa’s trail and understand the mindset of a criminal, as well as ensure Christmas can be celebrated again, Callum Drift ends up teaming up with a seasoned criminal named Jack O’Malley.
3. The Paradise of Thorns – November 6, 2024
This Thai movie tells the story of competition for inheritance. The Paradise Of Thorns tells the story of a same-sex couple named Thongkham and Sek, who have lived together through many hardships.
They bought land and a durian orchard together, but the land was actually in Sek’s name. One day, Sek had a fatal accident while inspecting the durian orchard, which resulted in his death.
Sek’s death caused intense conflict between Thongkham and Sek’s family. Sek’s family demanded that all assets in Sek’s name should be given to his mother because according to the law, Thongkham was only a friend.
Thongkham tried to seek justice, but he lost in court. Thongkham didn’t give up, he did everything he could to get back the land and durian orchards that were rightfully his. The dispute over the ownership of the property became so complicated that there were violent incidents.
4. Anak Kolong – November 7, 2024
Next up is Anak Kolong, the first new Indonesian film to open in November 2024 in theaters. The movie tells the story of the friendship of five teenagers-four boys and one girl-who are all children of military personnel.
They met at the TNI family dormitory, where they grew up together and faced various challenges in life.
One of them has to face a tough challenge that could affect his future. She is faced with the choice between pursuing her own dreams or fulfilling her father’s expectations. On the other hand, their friendship is also threatened by a complicated love triangle.
5. Danyang: Mahar Tukar Nyawa – November 7, 2024
The next new movie in theaters in November 2024 is a local horror film, Danyang: Mahar Tukar Nyawa. It tells the story of Galang, a man who dares to ally himself with the devil in order to achieve wealth. 6. Santet Segoro Pitu – November, 7 2024
Still in the local horror genre, this movie tells the story of the struggle of a young man named Andri who tries to uncover who is responsible for the witchcraft that attacked his family. Inspired by the Betz Illustration viral thread, Santet Segoro Pitu features well-known actors such as Ari Irham, Sandrinna Michelle, Christian Sugiono, and Sara Wijayanto.
Tommy Dewo, who previously worked on the Paradise Garden series (2021), is the director of this film. It is hoped that this film can add to the collection of local horror works that are successful in theaters.
7. Heretic – November 8, 2024
The next new movie hitting theaters in November 2024 comes from the horror western, Heretic. Heretic tells the story of Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, both missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, trying to carry out their mission to convert someone to Christianity in a small town.
Once upon a time, they visited a man named Mr. Reed. Everything seems to go smoothly at first, without them realizing that Reed is actually a terrifying figure.
Reed then imprisoned them both in his house. In addition, he also tortured them physically and mentally by asking questions and holding scary games. Heretic itself premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2024 before being released in theaters.
