Live Action Snow White gets a Low Score on Rotten Tomatoes

Ahead of its global release, the live action Snow White movie received a low score on review platform Rotten Tomatoes.

While many have praised Rachel Zegler’s performance, the score of the live action Snow White by critics on Rotten Tomatoes is quite low. This raises questions about the reasons behind the dislike for the movie.

The studio seems to prefer to focus on adapting live action versions of classic Disney animated films rather than presenting new stories. Of course this is a choice that reaps many pros and cons.

While nostalgia can be strong, we can actually go back and watch the animated movie again if we want to remember the story. Therefore, to make Disney’s live action remakes worthwhile, they should offer something new.

Snow White may have received a lot of praise after its release, but there also seems to be a lot of criticism of the movie on Rotten Tomatoes. Ahead of its global release this weekend, the troubled movie has recorded a very low rating on the review platform.

The Hollywood launch of Snow White earlier this week did not go well either. This was due to concerns about issues outside the movie, especially the political views of its stars. In addition, the controversy over the use of CGI to portray the dwarves could also bring negative attention to the movie.

Unfortunately, these concerns proved to be true. This was evident from the harsh criticism from representatives of the disabled community at the premiere, as well as the unsatisfactory reviews. Some reports suggest that the movie may have one of the worst box office openings in history, making the future of Snow White look bleak.

The movie was first listed on Rotten Tomatoes with a Tomatometer score of 45% (now 46%), and received various negative reviews. Adam Nayman of the Toronto Star stated that Disney seems to have lost its appeal with the latest addition to their lineup of live action remakes.

He wrote, “There’s nothing magical about this Marc Webb-directed movie, but there’s still something odd about it; spending $250 million to produce a movie that doesn’t work at all is kind of a dark art in itself.”

Tara Brady of the Irish Times criticized various weaknesses of the film, including the use of CGI for the dwarf characters, reflecting general concerns about the live action version of the film.

She states, “The most glaring weakness comes from the problematic way of reproducing the animated material… The lighting that is always like at dusk is very distracting to look at. Worst of all, the decision to ‘transform’ the dwarves into cartoon-like figures next to the human actors was very problematic.”
