10 Most Overrated Movies of All Time with Mediocre Plots

Of all the good and great movies out there, here are the 10 most overrated movies of all time. Too much praise!

Here are the 10 most overrated movies of all time. You may often hear the word overrated, especially in the entertainment industry. And maybe you’re still confused about its meaning.

Well, let’s put it this way. Overrated is a term for something that is so adored when it’s actually mediocre.

Now the context in relation to this discussion is of course a film that we always hear is the best, the best, the most must-watch, just a super duper cool film. But in reality when we watched it, the movie was mediocre.

Even if it’s good, it’s only “normal” good. And the fact is that there are many movies that are considered the most overrated movies.

But of the many, here are 10 movies that I consider the most overrated of all time. REMEMBER! This list is SUBJETIVE.

The Most Overrated Movies with Mediocre Plots In my personal opinion

Just as a reminder, once again, the content will definitely not be in line with the opinions of most people. The problem is that from the beginning, the writing is not subjective and it is more about the author’s personal experience.

1. Avatar (2009)

The first most overrated movies of all time is this phenomenal sci-fi film. If you remember, the hype for Avatar was absolutely incredible. From children to seniors, you can join the hype train of this film.

This hype is mostly aimed at the 3-D animation visuals, which are indeed revolutionary. And in fact, it’s thanks to his revolutionary visuals that 3-D technology in both film and theatre has become as sophisticated as it is today.

But yeah that’s it. Only the crazy 3-D technology makes this movie super duper hype. In terms of the story and the performances of all the actors, it’s pretty standard.

In fact, if I’m being completely honest, I think the purpose of Avatar is nothing more than a medium/vehicle to show off the film’s 3D technology. Yes, it’s okay too. After all, film is also essentially a business.

But at least give the audience a plot that is also revolutionary or not so ordinary.

2. Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

The next most overrated movie of all time is this biopic of the legendary rock band, Queen. Don’t get me wrong, some of you may already know that I’m a “born” Queen fanboy.

Then the fact is, I like this film. But of course as a media worker and also so that I can be much more open, objective, and wise as an individual. Then I must also be able to see the facts here.

Because honestly, even as a fanboy, when I watched Bohemian Rhapsody, I felt that it was nothing more than a standard musical biopic in general. With the exception of the performances of all the actors and actresses (especially Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury), I can say that this biopic “plays it safe”.

Though from the hype that exists. Many fans believe that the film will be more “daring.” That is to say, Bohemain Rhapsody will also show many dark sides of the band, especially of course from Freddie’s life.

But yes, we can’t really do anything about it. Because this safe route was indeed taken due to the request of Freddie’s family and also 2 of his band members, Brian May (guitarist) and Roger Taylor (drummer).

3. Twilight Saga (2008-2012)

When this adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s novel was announced, all the fans of the novel were really hype. But at that time, non-readers were not really into the hype.

They only joined the hype train when the first film adaptation, Twilight in 2008. When it was released, those who had watched the film, immediately considered this film as a very romantic film, very cool, just a must watch.

The comments were made even stronger by the super long queues at the cinema. Whether it’s the queue to buy tickets or the entrance, everything is like the queue to enter Fantasy World.

But when I watched the film, yes, this film in general is nothing more than a gothic romantic film. The only difference is the concept of romance between humans and vampires and the performance of all the actors which is really fun.

4. The Exorcist (1973)

Indeed, fear is just like comedy, aka subjective. But if we forget these basic principles for a moment. So we cannot deny that The Exorcist is now considered the scariest film of all time.

But then again, not everyone has that view either. One of them is me, who thinks that this phenomenal 70s horror film is mediocre.

In fact, it made me laugh alone. Specifically when the main character, Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair) is possessed by the demon Pazuzu. How can you not laugh? The reason is that during the trance, his Pazuzu even swore dirty words.

But let’s say he doesn’t swear, it’s still not that scary. That’s why until now I’m still confused by the audiences who used to be scared to the point of fainting themselves when watching this film.

In the words of many Indonesians, “it’s fun to see people in trance right in front of your eyes!”

5. Titanic (1997)

Even when this film was released, I, who was 11 years old at the time, already understood that Titanic was popular because of 2 things. Firstly, the lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio and secondly, the hit soundtrack, Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On‘.

And when I stole the time to watch the movie, I was right. Titanic is nothing more than an ordinary love tragedy drama film wrapped in one of the historical events that have occurred on our earth.

If you really like this film and consider it one of the best films, well okay I’m happy for you. But for me and a few others, this film didn’t really need to get that much hype.

6. 2012 (2009)

Well if this one, surely many of you still remember, right? Yes, at that time the film directed by disaster movie specialist director Roland Emmerich shocked our country.

2012 was basically inspired by the excitement of many people at that time about the potential end of the world in 2012. Now because at that time many people had seen the trailer and even the film, as a result those who had watched this immediately gave a review that was just as horrifying.

As a result, many of our citizens are increasingly horrified and convinced that the Mayan prediction of the end of the world in 2012 will actually happen. Now because of this, finally the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) at that time gave a haram fatwa against this film.

This haram fatwa essentially prohibits the 2012 film from being shown in cinemas. And we are also strongly advised not to watch this film. And all of this is just too much.

Because when I watched the movie, it was really like a typical Hollywood blockbuster disaster movie. Indeed, the film shows the earth being hit by a massive tsunami. Which eventually leads to an earth filled with water only.

But how come the whole earth didn’t perish at all? Because regardless of our beliefs, we all know that the apocalypse is the end of life. So all of planet Earth and all of its contents instantly cease to exist.

Moreover, at the end of the film, 2012 still features the resolution of conflicts between its characters. Well, if it’s the end of the world, where are the worldly problems? Yes, the point is made, this film is also nothing more than a popcorn flick.

7. No Time to Die (2021)

The next most overrated film of all time is the 25th James Bond film, which was released at the end of 2021. Indeed, there are many people who like this film. In fact, not a few consider it the best James Bond film. But I’m sorry, some consider No Time to Die to be mediocre.

Yes, it’s just like any other Bond/007 movie. There are probably 2 factors why many consider No Time to Die to be so awesome. Firstly, this is Daniel Craig’s last Bond film, and secondly (SPOILER ALERT!) James Bond dies in this film.

Yes, in my opinion, when I watched it, it was mediocre. Indeed, this is Craig’s coolest Bond film since Casino Royale (2006). But even Casino Royal is still cooler than this movie.

8. Citizen Kane (1941)

Even if you haven’t seen this legendary film, you must have heard about it or read about it.

Yes, Citizen Kane is now often considered the best film of all time. Well, if I personally have watched it, this film is considered the best because of its technicality. Yes, it is more or less the same case as the point of the film Avatar.

But the difference with Citizen Kane. At that time, there was no black-and-white sound film of the 40s with graphics, editing, and cinematography as refined as this film. Anyway, even if this film is released in 2021, it still looks and feels relevant.

Other than that? Plot-wise, the film is very ordinary. It’s only because of this technicality and Orson Welles’ (The Lady From Shanghai) great performance as Charles Foster Kane that the film is so memorable.

9. The Power of the Dog (2021)

Another film released in 2021. Yes, despite the film getting 12 nominations at the 94th Academy Awards a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, the film only won one award, for Best Director. Which was won by Jane Campion.

Although this may seem very sad. But if I’m honest, it’s not wrong either. Because this film is really ordinary. The film has an LGBT theme, a realistic 20s setting, and of course, Benedict Cumberbaych’s (Doctor Strange) hilarious performance.

But the pacing and overall film, The Power of the Dog, is mediocre. Even a little sleepy. Not to mention the metaphors, which some may find difficult to immediately understand with just one viewing.

10. Gone With the Wind (1939)

Like Citizen Kane, this is probably another “old” movie that you might have heard of or even watched too. If not, well prepare lots of snacks and try not to fall asleep okay.

Because this film is 4 hours long and essentially only tells the ballad and tragedy of the romance between the two main characters, Scarlett O’ Hara (Vivien Leigh) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable).

Even though the film is in color (not black and white), talking (not silent), great performances from all the stars, and also has been shown with a very neat arrangement of acts & intermission. Still, due to the specificity of the plot, 4 hours feels very long.

Also, the plot of this film is cool. But at the same time, it’s not too different from other tragedy films or romantic ballads. I don’t know why this film is so revered today.

Those are the 10 most overrated movies of all time. Now, what do you think about this discussion?
