Reasons Star Wars: The First Jedi Canceled Production

Here are the reasons why Star Wars: The First Jedi was canceled production. The reason for the movie's cancellation was revealed by Benioff

By now, we know the reason why Star Wars: The First Jedi was canceled production. Game of Thrones creator duo, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, are back in the spotlight for their latest project, a Netflix series adapting a book called 3 Body Problems.

Before joining Netflix, Benioff and Weiss actually had a schedule to work with Lucasfilm. However, the plan did not materialize after Lucasfilm canceled it.

As revealed earlier this year, Benioff and Weiss are looking to create a new Star Wars movie titled The First Jedi, which will tell the origin of the Jedi Order.

In this movie, audiences will see the first lightsaber ever created, as Benioff explained to Variety.

However, Benioff also included an explanation as to why the movie was canceled.

“[Lucasfilm] ultimately didn’t want to do The First Jedi story. We had a very specific story idea, and in the end they decided that they didn’t want to do it. And we completely understand. It was their company and their intellectual legacy, but we weren’t the droids they were looking for.”

In the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Benioff and Weiss went into more detail about the extent of The First Jedi’s development before Lucasfilm canceled the project. Weiss explained this to Josh Horowitz, the host of the show.

“I think we’re pretty far along, story-wise. We have outlines for the other two movies, and that’s just sad. To be honest, our success ratio in Hollywood, or the percentage of projects conceptualized is never very high, and there will always be those that are missed for various reasons, you know. Which is never meant to be. But as time goes on, you just have to let go of things like that, because otherwise you’ll go crazy.”

Currently, Lucasfilm is continuing the Star Wars project by producing Dawn of the Jedi, which is actively in development. James Mangold will direct the film, who is also responsible for Logan and Indiana Jones 5.
