In the latest Mario Day event that Nintendo held, the company announced a new collaboration with Universal and Illumination to develop The Super Mario Bros 2 movie.
The announcement was made by Nintendo’s own executive, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Chris Meledandri, CEO and founder of Illumination. Both emphasized that the film will expand the narrative of the world of Super Mario Bros.
“We will have a bright and fun story. This time we’re thinking of expanding Mario’s world even further. We’ll let you know once we’re ready to share more information.”
While there is definitely a continuation of The Super Mario Bros Movie, it is interesting that Miyamoto and Meledandri did not directly refer to the next movie as The Super Mario Bros Movie 2.
Super Mario Bros 2 Release Schedule
Nintendo and Universal have announced that the movie will be released on April 3, 2026 in the United States and several other countries.
Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the previous directors, and writer Matthew Fogel will officially return. They also revealed that they will start production on the movie soon, although we don’t know the exact date yet.

Like Wart, the ruler of Subcon, Bowser’s seven children as the Koopalings, the evil astronaut Tatanga, and even Shadow Mario, who was eventually revealed to be Bowser Jr.
