The Cursed Land is a Thai horror movie about Islamic and Malay beliefs, especially in the Narathiwat area in southern Thailand. The synopsis of The Cursed Land itself tells the story of a curse that is released and terrorizes a man and his daughter. They are a Buddhist family living in the midst of a Muslim society.
The movie not only revolves around the theme of ghosts, but also goes deeper as it addresses beliefs, culture, history, and the relationship between father and son.
The Cursed Land presents a horror story rooted in Islam, set in Southern Thailand, specifically in Narathiwat Province, where the majority of the population is Muslim. This is in contrast to the vast majority of Thailand’s population, which is predominantly Buddhist.
1. Synopsis The Cursed Land
After experiencing the loss of his beloved wife, Mit (Ananda Everingham) decides to take his daughter, May (Jennis Oprasert), to the Muslim-majority south of Thailand.
Cultural and religious differences are a big challenge for Mit and May. They feel alienated because they are Buddhists, and Mit is a man who doubts the beliefs of the Muslim community with whom he now lives.
Since they moved in, Mit started removing the various prayers and yantras that were around their new home. Her neighbors had warned her that these were inherited from the previous owners and should not be removed.
Soon after, strange events began to plague Mit and May’s lives. Their pet dog suddenly died, and they continued to be terrorized by mysterious events. Mit had tried various ways to get rid of the curse, until finally he decided to ask a Muslim cleric for help.
