The number of episodes for The Last of Us season 2 will not be as many as the first season. In an interview with Deadline, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the two executive producers of the series, revealed that the second season of The Last of Us will only consist of 7 episodes, or 2 episodes less than the first season.
The reason The Last of Us Season 2 has fewer episodes
Despite the smaller number of episodes, the two stated that one of the episodes will have a longer storyline. Regarding the number of episodes, they have also explained to Deadline in January.
They really considered how many episodes there would be, with the storyline in mind. In fact, Craig Mazin mentioned that The Last of Us Part II has more story material than the first game.
“The story material that we got from (The Last Of Us) Part II was much more than the story material that was presented in the first game, so part of what we did early on was figure out how to deliver the story over multiple seasons. When you do that, you look for breaks, and as we explained, for this season, the main break is after seven episodes.”
What is also interesting is Craig Mazin’s statement that they cannot combine all the stories in one season. This means that there is a possibility that the entire story that has been prepared by the production team will be released in two to three seasons.
As such, there is a chance that The Last of Us will continue its story into a third season and possibly even a fourth.
Some of the characters that appeared in the first season will definitely not appear again in the second season, such as Bill and Frank. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann already have story material for the future of the series, and they have also planned what they will do next.
We’ll have to wait and see if The Last of Us continues into seasons three and four or ends in season two.
