The fundamental difference between Quincy and Shinigami lies in how they handle the Hollow. Shinigami tries to purify the Hollow and guide human souls to Soul Society, while Quincy chooses to eradicate the Hollow completely.
This action caused an imbalance in the number of spirits between the human world and Soul Society, potentially threatening the survival of the world. To find a solution, Shinigami attempted to negotiate with Quincy and asked them to stop the extermination of the Hollow.
However, Quincy refused the request, arguing that the Hollow had killed many of their members, so they felt they could not stay silent. This incompatibility led to a larger conflict, where Shinigami carried out a massive extermination of the Quincy race, resulting in the near extinction of the group.
Legend of Quincy
The history of Quincy stems from the figure of Yhwach, who is at the center of a legend known as “Kaiser Gesang”. This legend tells the story of a figure known as the “sealed king”.
In the story, the previously sealed king will gain his freedom after 900 years. The process of restoring his powers takes place over several periods: his heartbeat returns after 900 years, his intelligence after 90 years, and his strength after 9 years.
After regaining his power, the king will reportedly be able to rule the world within 9 days. However, to regain his power, the king must steal Quincy’s impure power.
Yhwach performed the Auswhalen ritual which allowed him to draw power from Quincy’s descendants without having to wait for them to die first.
