Can the Cordyceps infection that we saw in The Last of Us (2023) series happen to us in the real world? Check it out guys!
Before starting, I would like to remind you that SPOILER ALERT! for those of you who may not have watched The Last of Us series (2023).
As for those of us who have watched, as we know from the series, it is revealed that all humans who become clickers are basically infected with Cordyceps. Cordyceps itself is a fungus. The fungus will take over the infected individual.
Taking over here means that the fungus will control all their movements and thoughts. Now the fungus will be able to infect or spread, thus creating an “army” of Cordyceps infectants.
Can Cordyceps Infection Happen in the Real World?
Now when we see all this in the series, we no doubt think that all these causes are very natural and realistic. It’s not like in a zombie movie or series, which is much more imaginary.
Based on this response, we wondered. Is it possible that the Cordyceps infection we saw in The Last of Us series could also occur in the real world?
Not Likely to Happen
As you can see from this tweet from Paul Stamets, the answer is NO WAY. Why is that? And who is this Stamets figure?
As you can see from his account bio and also from the ScreenRant report, Stamets is a Mycologist. What is a mycologist? Simply put, he is a person who is an expert in everything related to fungi.
So yes, once again as you read through the tweet upload, fungi will not be able to infect humans. So yes guys, Cordyceps infection will not be able to infect us in the real world.
However, Stamets highly appreciates the scriptwriters of The Last of Us series. According to him, the series’ creative team succeeded in presenting an exciting adventure while fostering our interest in knowing more about fungi. And he’s right.
