Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed his return as Doctor Strange, which was previously only a rumor. Apparently, he will be facing Doctor Doom who Robert Downey Jr. will be playing in Avengers: Doomsday.
During the recent Tokyo Comic Convention, Cumberbatch showed his excitement for this big project. Especially since he will be working with Robert Downey Jr.
1. Confirmation Benedict Cumberbatch will Play in Avengers: Doomsday
“Benedict Cumberbatch will return as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Doomsday alongside Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr,” Cumberbatch told Japanese media outlet TV Groove, as quoted by gamesradar.
Cumberbatch also revealed that he is excited to collaborate with Robert Downey Jr. again, as well as the Russo brothers.
“I’m really excited not only to be working with the Russo brothers again, but also to see Robert Downey Jr. return as Doctor Doom. I think there will be exciting developments ahead, and I can’t wait to see what happens next,” he said.
According to Variery, Cumberbatch also discussed his role and Strange’s character development during an appearance at the Red Sea International Film Festival. He teased that his complex character will have many things to play in the future.
“He does go through changes, but he also constantly faces the same question: what do you sacrifice for the power you have?” the actor replied.
“The powers he has are not given by special spiders or nanotechnology, but by a very dangerous demon or god from another dimension. As an individual, I think he’s evolving,” adds Cumberbatch.
“I think she is still in the process of learning to interact with others, work in a team, and trust others. He’s a very complex and interesting character. Originally, he was a very arrogant person, doing amazing things as a genius neurosurgeon, and now he’s doing amazing things as a magician. He’s evolving, but still has a lot of psychological issues he’s dealing with.”
2. Marvel’s Efforts to Restore the MCU’s Glory
The return of Robert Downey Jr. surprised many MCU fans when Marvel made the announcement over the summer at San Diego Comic-Con. However, this time he won’t be returning as Tony Stark, instead taking on the role of Doctor Doom.
Interestingly, he is not the only famous star who will be returning after Avengers: Endgame. Chris Evans, who has played Steve Rogers/Captain America since 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and gave up his shield in Endgame, will also reappear in Avengers: Doomsday.
Cumberbatch and Downey previously collaborated in Infinity War, where Doctor Strange and Tony Stark teamed up on the planet Titan to face Thanos.
The contentious yet complementary dynamics of their relationship was one of the main attractions of the movie. Now, in Doomsday, their interactions will take an interesting turn, given that they are on different sides.
The movie Avengers: Doomsday has a big challenge to restore the momentum of the MCU, which has become less stable since Endgame. With the return of major actors like Cumberbatch, Chris Evans, and Downey, as well as directors Russo brothers, Marvel seems determined to restore the glory that fans have been waiting for.
