Street Fighter Live Action Movie Still Looking for a New Director

After the withdrawal of Danny and Michael Philippou from the Street Fighter live action project, Legendary and Capcom are still looking for a new director.

The in-production live action Street Fighter movie faced some problems recently, one of which was losing its director. They are currently still looking for a new director for the project.

However, these issues have not hindered their plans to release the film in theaters. Sony and Legendary have set a release date for the movie in 2026.

With this new schedule, they have enough time to address any issues that arise. They can also ensure the smooth running of the project until its completion.

Based on a report from Deadline that we launched from Yoursay on Sunday (6/30/2024), the Street Fighter movie that will get a reboot is planned to be released on March 20, 2026.

This announcement comes after Danny and Michael Philippou, the pair behind the successful horror film Talk to Me, will no longer be directing the movie.

In April 2023, Legendary announced that they had successfully secured the license to create a Street Fighter live action movie and TV show.

Originally, the Philippou brothers were going to direct the project. However, they later decided to leave the project in order to focus on their next A24 movie, Bring Her Back.

Legendary and Capcom want to start production immediately to meet their newly announced release date. Therefore, they are still looking for a new director without any time certainty. In addition, Street Fighter movies face great difficulties due to the quality of previous adaptations.

Adaptation that Always Fails

Despite getting an 11% and 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie Street Fighter (1994) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme was a commercial success earning almost $100 million from a $35 million budget.

And Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) also received very poor ratings of 3% and 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was unsuccessful at the box office, grossing only $12 million from a budget of $50 million.

Over the past few years, video games adapted into movies have often been unsuccessful both critically and financially.

However, recently there has been quite a change with movies like Sonic the Hedgehog, Uncharted, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie achieving success.

Similarly, television adaptations such as The Last of Us and Fallout were also huge successes. This will definitely raise expectations for the upcoming Street Fighter movie.

As evident from previous adaptations, Street Fighter is difficult to make into a satisfying movie because the in-game story lacks structure.
