On January 19, 2024, the live action adaptation of Golden Kamuy hit theaters in Japan. A few months after its debut in Japan, the live action adaptation of Golden Kamuy, which is full of historical elements and for mature audiences, will be available on Netflix.
1. Live Action Golden Kamuy to air on Netflix in May
Netflix Asia has released a new trailer announcing that the live action movie will premiere on Netflix on May 19, four months after its initial release in Japan.
This live action movie adapts the Weekly Young Jump manga series by Japanese mangaka Satoru Noda. Shigeaki Kubo will serve as the director of the movie, with Tsutomu Kuroiwa as the screenwriter and background music by Yutaka Yamada.
Production supervision of the movie was handled by Hiroshi Nakagawa and Deko Akibe, with CREDEUS acting as the production house.
In the movie, Kento Yamazaki played the lead role as Saichi Sugimoto. Then there is Anna Yamada as Asirpa, and Yûma Yamoto holds the character of Yoshitake Shiraishi.
Others include Gordon Maeda as Hyakunosuke Ogata, Ryôhei Ohtani as Genjirô Tanigaki, Shuntarô Yanagi as Yôhei/Kôhei Nikaido, and Katsuya Takagi as Tatsûma Ushiyama.
Katsumi Kiba will play the character Shinpachi Nagakura, Hisako Ôkata as Huci, and Makita Sports as Takechiyo Gotô.
2. Golden Kamuy Synopsis
The movie is set in the northern region of Hokkaido during the chaotic times of the late Meiji period. Sugimoto, a soldier who has just finished fighting, decides to go to Hokkaido in an attempt to make a fortune to help the family of his dead comrade.
During this hunt for riches, he meets Asirpa, a young girl. The two then accidentally get involved in a hunt for a hidden treasure, which is linked to a treasure map carved on the prisoner’s body.
Their journey takes them through risky territories, violent conflicts, and interactions with a variety of people, including the military, criminals, and the Ainu people.
Golden Kamuy presents the culture and customs of the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, through characters like Asirpa. Let’s look forward to seeing how the live action movie adaptation of Golden Kamuy will present its story.
