PlayStation has just announced that they will be closing the Concord game on September 6 due to minimal sales.
PlayStation made this decision after the game failed to reach their desired sales target, despite being in development for eight years. As a form of compensation, PlayStation will provide full refunds to all players who have purchased the game.
PlayStation closes Concord game because it didn’t meet player expectations
This decision must have taken many fans by surprise, considering they had been waiting for Concord as one of PlayStation’s flagship games. However, market conditions were not in favor of this game, so the decision to shut it down had to be taken. In an official statement, PlayStation said,
“This decision was not easy, but it was important to maintain quality and emphasize more promising projects in the future.”
Many people felt that the gaming experience did not meet players’ expectations, and the high price led to low interest and sales. However, for those who have already purchased the game, there is some relief as there is a refund option.
A Specific Agenda Campaign that Outshines Gameplay
On the other hand, while the gameplay may seem mundane and the price tag may seem disproportionate for a game like Concord, many gamers feel that the “agenda” elements inserted in this game are even more striking than the gameplay.
This should serve as a lesson to other developers that they can’t force gamers’ preferences, especially in matters that have little to do with the core gameplay.
Of course, PlayStation’s biggest failure is not something they should be proud of. However, perhaps this can serve as a turning point and evaluation for all parties involved for future games.
Very Poor Sales
Quoting Kompas, sales of this game did not make a profit, with only about 25,000 copies sold in less than two weeks. This figure is lower than the sales of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which became the worst game of 2023.
In addition, the number of players playing the game simultaneously is reportedly quite low, with a peak of around 697 players. This low number of active players certainly has an impact on the gaming experience, as users will find it difficult to find friends or opponents to start matches.
In addition, Concord has also lost ground to similar games that can be played for free. These games include Valorant and Overwatch, both in terms of gameplay, features, and of course, price.
